General notes on positioning:

  • Most millinery pieces are designed to sit on the right-hand side of your head. Tilt the shape downward towards your right ear, lifting slightly on the left for an elegant look. (Unless you have had a hat or fascinator custom-made for the left-hand side, your hat should sit on the right.)
  • Tilting your hat slightly adds height, opens your face, and elevates your overall look.
  • When in doubt, always position your hat further forward rather than further back—we want to see your eyes but not too much forehead!
  • Beret and percher bases should sit about a little finger’s width from right your eyebrow.
  • Saucers and larger hats should appear to touch your right eyebrow when looking straight ahead in the mirror.
  • If your hat is a wide headband or crown band, tilt the top forward slightly once it’s behind your ears.
  • Feather fascinators on combs can be positioned to your preference—either left or right, at the back of a French pleat, or above a bun. However, avoid placing them directly on top of your head.
  • And remember—elastic NEVER goes under your chin! We’re not at a children’s party!

Additional step by step notes for different types of hats can be seen after the videos along with some helpful aftercare tips for storing and maintaining your millinery.

If Your Hat or Headpiece is on an Elastic:

  1. The label should sit at the back of the hat.
  2. Place the hat on your forehead, using your forehead to hold it in place.
  3. Pull the elastic behind your ears and underneath all your hair so it sits low at the nape of your neck.
  4. Bring your hair back over the elastic to hide it – a tail comb helps here.
  5. Adjust the hat into the correct position on your head.
  6. Use your fingers or a comb to tease out some hair at the front for a natural look.
  7. If your headpiece has a comb, lift the hat slightly, pull the comb backwards then, slide it into your hair toward your forehead for extra grip.
  8. If your hat has a small flat disc underneath that sits to your head, you can slide Kirby grips into this base for added security.
  9. If you ware wearing your hair up, leave down the front whisps of your hair until the hat is positioned, then bring these pieces of hair over the top of the elastic and pin into the rest of your hair style.
  10. We know lots of people shy away from elastics, However elastic really is one of the easiest and most comfortable ways to wear a hat and even with the shortest hair it is easy to hide.

Tip: If your hat or fascinator is slipping, ensure the elastic is positioned lower on your neck and that the hat is far enough forward on your forehead. – Think elastic band around a tennis ball, it needs to be in the right position to stay put! – if adjusting, re-adjust both top and bottom of the elastic.

If Your Hat or Headpiece is on a Narrow Hairband:

  1. Either the label or a fabric join marks the back of your hat.
  2. Position the band just behind your ears like a normal hairband; the hat should naturally sit in the correct position.
  3. All our narrow headbands can be shaped to fit your head comfortably.
  4. If needed, push the band slightly forward to the top for a preferred look or to bring it towards your eyebrow
  5. Tease your hair over the hairband to blend it seamlessly.

Tip: If the band feels too tight or loose, gently bend the metal to adjust its shape. The bands are malleable and can be reshaped for comfort but take care not to pull the stitches attaching it to the hat.

If Your Hat or Headpiece is on a Comb:

  1. Ensure the prongs of the comb face toward your forehead.
  2. Backcomb your hair and apply hairspray or product where the comb will sit.
  3. Hold your hair back at the placement area.
  4. Push the comb’s prongs forward toward your forehead whilst continuing to hold your hair back.
  5. Release the comb and hair once it feels secure. (If it does not feel secure at this point – start process again)
  6. If needed, slide Kirby grips over the twisted part comb for added hold.

Tip: A little hairspray won’t damage your fascinator and can help keep everything in place. A comb needs the time spent on getting it in correctly to stay in place all day – don’t rush this process!

Aftercare Tips:

  • Store your hat in its box, away from direct sunlight, to maintain its shape and longevity.
  • Keep the box flat to prevent the hat from warping.
  • Stuff the hat with tissue paper to support its shape and prevent pressure marks. If your brim is not 100% flat ensure that it is supported on and rests on tissue paper so it does not sink into itself over time
  • If veiling lifts over time, place the hat on a vase a few days before wearing it to allow the veiling to settle, or lightly steam it with a kettle.
  • If your hat gets damaged or needs a refresh, we offer reshaping and repair services https://beverleyedmondsonmillinery.co.uk/services/hat-alterations-repairs/ .
  • Want to match your millinery to a new outfit for a different occasion? We can edit or completely re-trim or restyle your hat for a fresh look.

Stand tall, wear your hat with pride – you look amazing!
